GPS IMPLEMENTS NEW WIRELESS COMMUNICATION POLICY IN RESPONSE TO SB139
GPS Communications
July 9, 2025
Gracemont Public Schools is asking students to Unplug to Reconnect when school resumes in August.
The Gracemont Board of Education approved a policy on July 8, 2025, prohibiting students from using cellphones or personal electronic devices during the school day. The policy is in response to Senate Bill 139, which the Legislature passed and Gov. Kevin Stitt signed into law in May.
The state law makes the restriction mandatory for the 2025-26 school year.
Students who violate the policy will be subject to disciplinary action. Disciplinary actions will be listed in the Student Code of Conduct book.
The following rules apply to the use of wireless telecommunication devices, including cell phones and cellular watches. Violating this policy will result in the confiscation of the device by school personnel and disciplinary action.
1. Students are not permitted to use cell phones or other PEDs in the classroom setting. If students are caught using their devices or the devices disrupt the educational environment of the classroom, disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with the student handbook. The school will assume no responsibility for damaged, lost, or stolen cell phones or PEDs brought to school.
2. Cell phones, cellular watches, and headphones are prohibited in the school.
3. Students may leave their phones at home, lock them in their car, or lock them in their assigned lockers. Devices stored in Lockers must be turned off. Locks for lockers will be the responsibility of the student.
4. Any student using a wireless device in a prohibited area will have it confiscated immediately.
5. To protect privacy and maintain the integrity of educational programs, students are strictly prohibited from taking pictures or videos using cell phones or other wireless devices.
6. Upon reasonable suspicion, the superintendent, principal, teacher, or security personnel shall have the authority to detain and search or authorize the search of any student or property in the possession of the student for unauthorized wireless telecommunication devices. Students found to have or using a wireless telecommunications device during class violate the rules and shall be subject to disciplinary action, including, but not limited to, confiscation of the device, parent/guardian conference, detention, or suspension.
7. The exception to this policy may be granted by the site administrator for purposes relating to 504 OR IEP accommodations or for the health needs of a student
Failure to comply will result in the following consequences:
o 1st Offense – Three days of in-school suspension. The phone will be confiscated and secured in the school office.
o 2nd Offense – Three days of out-of-school suspension. The PED will be confiscated and secured in the school office.
o 3rd Offense – The PED will be confiscated, and the student will be prohibited from having a cell phone or PED on campus and will face an out-of-school suspension as determined by the administration.
This policy is in place to maintain a focused learning environment and protect student privacy.
A parent or guardian will be required to pick up the electronic device when it is confiscated. There will be no exceptions made to this requirement.
